South of Perth travel plan for a Margaret River Wine Experience on a self drive road trip in Australia
South of Perth travel plan for a Margaret River Wine Experience
on a self drive road trip in Australia
5 Days and 4 Nights
Day 1 Perth to Dunborough
The next 5 days are designed so you can enjoy the fruits of
one the most sought after wine regions in the world. Rivalling
France and California as a premium wine growing region, the area
know as Margaret River is set against a backdrop of rugged coastline,
pristine beaches, pounding surf and towering forests. Head south
from Perth towards the major southern centres of Bunbury and Busselton.
Busselton is a logical stop for lunch and take time to marvel
at the 2 kilometre long jetty, longest in the southern hemisphere.
Todays destination is Dunsborough, which sits at the northern
end of the region and is a good base from which to visit several
wineries as well as the spectacular beaches of Meelup, Eagle Bay
and Yallingup. A complete guide of the various wineries, their
specialities and facilities are available from many locations
in the region.
Suggested overnight stay - Abbey Beach Resort.

Day 2 Dunsborough to Margaret River
As most of the wineries do not open until 10am, we
suggest an early morning swim. The short 5km drive out to either
Eagle Bay or Meelup is well worth the effort. As the next 3 days
will concentrate on wine, you may wish to consider an unique opportunity
to dive over the former Australian Naval ship HMAS Swan which
was recently purposely sunk off Dunsborough. Many of the wineries
offer eating facilities so consult your guide and chose one where
you can combine tastings with lunch and or dinner. Remember to
always nominate a skipper. As you work your way through the
back country lanes past the various wineries and their rolling
hills covered with grapes, follow the signs to Margaret River,
your home for the next 2 nights.
Suggested overnight stay - Quest Margaret River.

Day 3 & 4 Margaret River
Again, if a morning swim is the order of the day,
the 10km drive to Prevalley Beach will bring you to the home of
the annual International Surf Classic. If big waves are only for
watching, a few hundred metres down the beach a gentle break is
ideal for novices and families. You are now in the heart of this
remarkable wine growing the region. The various wineries are too
numerous to mention but all are within easy reach of one another,
some simply over the road. All offer tastings and some will ship
your purchases home for you. Plan your days based on the particular
blends that suit your palate or just follow your instincts, you
cant get lost. For the evenings, take advantage of local chefs
who combine the best ingredients from the area to offer superb
food to compliment the local vintage.
Suggested overnight stay - Quest Margaret River.

Day 5 Margaret River to Perth
As you make your way north along the Bussell Highway
back to Perth, there are several opportunities to sample the local
cheese that are also making the region famous. At Bunbury, head
inland through Harvey and Pinjarra and marvel at the green rolling
hills and variety of local fruit and vegetables. Now that you
have been touched by the natural beauty of the south west and
the wines it has to offer, you will count the days until you can
return.
