Traditional Aussie Tucker Food in Australia
I grew up in Australia with no McDonald's or KFC or pizza places.
In the bush where we all had a craving for these old traditional
meals, called dinner but our family said Tea Time, deserts we referred
to as super and sweets which we called Lollies.
Below are the foods I grew up in Victoria and I realise different
states have different food to some degree though below are more
nationally recognized traditional meals, deserts and sweets.
Now
if my words don't make sense look at our page on old Australian
slang or as we say Lingo. I think I cover most slang words there.
The iconic Australian traditional fish and chips - probably after
the Aussie meat pie the most sort after food a tourist wants to
try. Which state has the best fish and fishes (forget the award
winning one you see on TV and fancy Cafes) the humble corner Fish
an Chip shop is for me. When you enter the heat from the vats, the
smell of vinegar and seeing a fridge full of only coca cola and
Paul's Ice Coffee and it used to be wrapped in a newspaper (True).
It was good back in the old days you got to catch up on 2 week old
news while eating. No Fish and Chips is complete with vinegar. The
best state of course Victoria we had Flake (Shark don't knock till
you try it)
Real true Aussie Anzac Biscuits - now if you know how to bake
em right they stay soft for days.
Real true Aussie cake the Neenish Tarts - sweet as but you can't
stop at one
Real true Aussie hamburger - I had a cafe and was making 100's
so I know a real burger when I see one
The iconic Australian hamburger - Sloppy burgers really do taste
better
Aussie sanga sandwich - Bread, butter, burnt sausage that's fallen
on the ground a few times cause you have to much Heinz Tomato Sauce
and a napkin (anyone remember the old White Crow sauce seriously
a good sauce haven't seen it around for 40 years now)
A Aussie sanga sandwich - Bread, butter, burnt saugage that's
fallen on the ground a few times cause you have to much HeinzeTomato
Sauce and a napkin (anyone remember the old White Crow sauce seriously
a good sauce haven't seen it around for 40 years now)
The iconic Australian traditional salad sandwich - usually made
on a Saturday for lunch because mum didn't want to cook. If it hasn't
beetroot it's not an Aussie salad sandwich and YES Golden Circle
is the sweetest beetroot I can find.
Real Aussie sausage roll - now it's not a hotdog with pastry in
it like #StarBucks overseas (I see in Asia when there) sells it's
real beef mix.
1.Preheat oven to 220C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
2.Combine mince, onion, carrot, egg, parsley, dried herbs and pepper
in a large bowl. Mix until well combined. ...
3.Shape one-quarter of the mince mixture into a sausage and place
along 1 long edge of pastry. ...
4.Brush sausage roll tops with milk.
Real true Aussie hundred's and thousand sandwiches. Don't knock
it until you try it then you will become a big kid again. We had
this like at least twice a week and thought there was no better
food as a kid.
Real true Aussie different names by different mums coco rice crackers,
chocolate bubble crackers whatever just imagine coco pops in a cake
10 out of 10 if you 8 years old
Real true Aussie Dim Sims - Humble iconic Aussie food and never
compete without huge amounts of heart stopping of soya sauce over
them . Your right Deano unforgettable food.
The iconic Australian Lamington - Now lets understand one thing
the traditional recipes on Aussie food often had Carnation Condensed
Milk in the recipe but mum said that formula seems to have changed
and so to the taste. Now lamingtons are like rabbits they pop up
everywhere school fates, family lunches but they MUST have raspberry
or strawberry as a middle layer that's a MUST.
The first
lamington
was made in 1900 at Old Government House for Lord and Lady Lamington.
Real Aussie Rack of Lamb - this picture replace my 1000 words.
Lamb used to be our second choice meat and so cheap in the 60's
and 70's but now it's luxury due to the price increase. Oh real
mint sauce has to accompany this if not ask for it.
Aussie Vanilla Slices - so sweet and always seems to fall apart
but delicious and one is enough I found very filling
Aussie vegemite - isn't that a trick we play on the tourists?
- I can't remember seeing any aussie eating it last 30 years I have
seen. But a a kid mum gave us on toast at breakfast and in the school
lunch box as it last thru anything.
The Australian iconic Tim Tam - simply sweet and filling and perfect
with a cuppa tea.
The iconic Australian traditional desert the Pavlova
Authentic Aussie Chicko Roll (like a Asian Springs Roll but only
better)
Aussie prawns on the barbie - Now if you're a Tasmanian or Victorian
we really never had that on our barbies growing up especially in
the bush. But if you're from Brisbane or Cairns well it's been a
tradition for a long time. Now prawns are much more easily accessible
it's common for most Barbies to spot a stake of prawns
Real Aussie TBone Steak - Vegan pls don't look - but I saved the
best till last whether grain feed or pasture feed Aussie meat is
incredible. I have tasted Argentinean, Georgian, German, American
beef and I always go back to that distinct Aussie flavour and taste.
